Exploring Your Homeschool Options

Are you wondering why so many people are turning to home education? Are you confused by the homeschool lingo you hear—terms like Charlotte Mason and Delight-directed? In this session, we will explain why so many people are turning to home education and give an overview of the various popular approaches so that you can discover what is best for you and your family.

Fantasy Literature and the Homeschooled Child

Narnia, Middle Earth and the fairy tale worlds of fantasy literature hold a special appeal for the imaginative and adventurous child. Is it healthy to include hefty doses of fantasy literature in your child's education? What are the advantages-- and concerns-- that you need to be aware of? Come learn more about fantasy literature throughout the ages and how it can be used to enrich your child’s literary experience.

The Just War: An Exploration of the Attitudes toward War in The Lord of the Rings.

Parents and teens are bombarded today with the rhetoric of war. When is war just? Is it ever right? What is the point of it all? Author J.R.R Tolkien makes many philosophical comments about war in The Lord of the Rings as his characters express a range of attitudes from the pacifist position to those who glory in battle. Learn how this wise veteran of the horrors of the Great War uses his literary masterpiece to make the case for the concept of the Just War.

The Classical Education that Created A World

Many people are familiar with Middle-earth, the fantasy world which was created by J.R.R Tolkien and which has now affected our own world so profoundly. However, this world was created from the soil of a classical education. Come learn how the ancient epic stories of Troy, Beowulf, and Camelot inspired Middle Earth and how the love of literature and language enriched it.

Teaching Your Child to Love Reading

If you teach your child to read, you have accomplished something. If you teach him to love to read, you have made his life richer and your own job easier! Learn ways to begin to create this love of reading and writing at an early age and to foster it as your child grows older.

Are Parents Really Necessary?

In our society, there is a growing trend to place children into government or privately run institutions as early as age 3 in order to foster their “intellectual development.” Are parents as capable of educating their child as a trained professional? How necessary are parents to the educational process? Come explore some of the modern educational myths that have arisen in our society and find out your role in your child’s academic future.

The Aging HomeSchool Parent

Okay, okay. You have been at this homeschooling thing for while now and suddenly find yourself with your medicine cabinet stocked with children’s vitamins AND Geritol. Your nest is starting to empty, but you STILL have years of homeschooling ahead of you. Come learn about the joys and challenges of your changing homeschool family and strategies for facing the years ahead.

Media and the Homeschool Family

The national media is beginning to make subtle and not-so-subtle attacks on the homeschool community. Learn more about these attacks and how we can do our part in winning the homeschool media wars as individuals. Also learn about positive ways that media elements such as television, radio, movies, and the Internet can enhance your child's education-- and when it can destroy it.

How to Get Your Poetic License

Do you love poetry and want to learn more? Do you hate poetry and wish you didn’t? Did you know that many teens and some adults are closet poets? Come uncloak the mystery of poetry and learn how to appreciate it and understand its power. Also learn some general strategies for improving your own poetic creations.
