Fantasy Literature and the Homeschooled Child
Narnia, Middle Earth and the fairy tale worlds of fantasy literature hold a special appeal for the imaginative and adventurous child. Is it healthy to include hefty doses of fantasy literature in your child's education? What are the advantages-- and concerns-- that you need to be aware of? Come learn more about fantasy literature throughout the ages and how it can be used to enrich your child’s literary experience.
The Just War: An Exploration of the Attitudes toward
War in The Lord of the Rings.
Parents and teens are bombarded today with the
rhetoric of war. When is war just? Is it ever right? What is the point of it
all? Author J.R.R Tolkien makes many philosophical comments about war in The
Lord of the Rings as his characters express a range of attitudes from the
pacifist position to those who glory in battle. Learn how this wise veteran of
the horrors of the Great War uses his literary masterpiece to make the case for
the concept of the Just War.
The Classical Education that Created A World
Many people are familiar with Middle-earth, the fantasy world which was created
by J.R.R Tolkien and which has now affected our own world so profoundly.
However, this world was created from the soil of a classical education. Come
learn how the ancient epic stories of Troy, Beowulf, and Camelot inspired Middle
Earth and how the love of literature and language enriched it.
Teaching Your Child to Love Reading
If you teach your child to read, you have

Biography of Amelia Harper
Amelia Harper is the author of Literary Lessons from the Lord of the Rings, a
complete one-year literature curriculum for secondary level students. She is
also a contributing editor for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, a national
homeschool publication. In addition to homeschooling for over 17 years, she has
worked as an English tutor and as a free-lance writer with over 200 published
articles and poems to her credit.
